Senator Rodney Tom was first elected in 2002 as a Republican to the State House of Representatives. He was re-elected in 2004. In 2006, Tom ran as a Democrat and won a tough race for State Senate, and he was re-elected in 2010.
In early 2013, Tom was elected the Majority Leader of the bipartisan Senate Majority Coalition Caucus, whose priorities are job creation, authoring sustainable budgets, and reforming our education system to provide world-class schools. Under his leadership, the legislature passed a balanced budget with no new taxes that put over $1 billion more into our children’s schools and froze college tuition rates for the first time in 26 years.
A lifelong Washingtonian, Tom graduated from Newport High School in Bellevue, earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Washington and a graduate degree from the University of Southern California.
Rodney Tom worked in real estate on the Eastside for over 18 years. Tom is active with the March of Dimes Seattle. He is an avid outdoorsman who has climbed all of Washington’s five volcanoes, competed in five marathons and has ridden in the Seattle to Portland bike ride. Tom and his wife Deborah live in Medina with their two kids.
